Soft Maple is a term used to differentiate it from hard maple. Soft maple is similar to birch in density and grain. It accepts stain much more evenly and is quite stable. We will often steer a customer away from birch or hard maple to soft maple for cabinetry because of its characteristic stability and easy machining. It machines smoothly and can be used as an alternative paint grade hardwood as well.
