Many of the staircases we build are quite large in size, and stair treads made of solid hardwood can become unmanageable if they are too wide and long. Slight changes in humidity can cause a rather large slab of hardwood to expand or contract slightly. Our solution was to create a process whereby we laminate a 1/8 inch thick custom made veneer onto a heavy substrate. The result is an absolutely stable stair tread, with no limits on it's size, and is practically indistinguishable from solid wood.
