Ipe is actually a generic term for a group of wood species that grow in the tropical rain forest and are all related to each other.  There is no differentiation in the industry between these varying woods.  Most have a greenish, brown color, though it can vary dramatically.  It’s density and weather resistance make it a very viable exterior decking material.  It is also known for several other unique characteristics.  First, it contains naturally occurring chemicals that result in the wood being absolutely insect resistant.  Secondly, those same chemicals cause the lumber to be considered as a fire resistant material, as strange as that may sound for wood.  And thirdly, most of the lumber titled as “Ipe” cannot be glued together with any kind of glue.  The chemicals present can even break down epoxy.
